Gender Equity VS Equality

Gender Equity VS Equality

When referring to equal treatment regardless of sex, people often use “gender equity” and “gender equality” interchangeably. However, they differ greatly in definition and application. Gender equality means individuals receive the same rights, resources, and rewards regardless of sex. Yet, this can create an illusion of fairness, as both genders don’t start from the same position due to societal favoritism.

Gender equity addresses this by providing resources that cater to individual needs. As a marginalized group, more opportunities are needed to make up for years of oppression and lack of privileges. Equity doesn’t erase equality but comes before it. To achieve equal opportunities and fairness, equity must come first.

To be a workplace that values equal opportunities, acknowledge the marginalized group and tailor support to their needs. Here are ways to close the gender gap through gender equity at work:

1. Be clear in organization policies: State your stance on gender equity and zero tolerance for discrimination.

2. Mentor and train managers: Lead by example and train managers to evaluate employees unbiasedly.

3. Be flexible in work arrangements: Accommodate different needs, such as flexible hours or maternity leaves.

4. Don’t make assumptions: Avoid biases and preconceived notions when making decisions.

5. Invest in developing women: Provide training, development, and networking opportunities.

Reflection Questions:
– Do I undermine women in my organization?
– What can I do to support and uplift them?
