Our mental health is determined by multiple factors that can be on a social, economic, and individual basis. It is our state of wellbeing that impacts other areas in our lives, like our ability to build relationships, and our ability to work and create. As an aspect of health, mental health has been neglected and even looked down upon for many years. However, with new generations breaking the stigma, people are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of taking care of their mental wellbeing. In the midst of all the changes we wish to make for the next year, looking after our mental health should be a priority.
Here are 5 changes you can make in 2023 to take care of your mental health:
1- Write it all down
Journaling offers many benefits since it’s an efficient outlet to pinpoint negative thoughts and replace them with positive self-talk. It’s also a great way to identify triggers and track your progress. By writing down fears, problems, and concerns, journaling becomes a powerful form of stress relief.
2- Identify triggers and distance yourself from them
Take time to reflect on the factors that tend to affect your mental health. Is it a specific group of people that don’t support or help you grow? Could it be harmful coping mechanisms that do more harm than good? Or maybe it’s social media, which can lead to unhealthy comparison cycles? Whatever your triggers are, begin creating distance. You can gradually quit harmful habits, take a break from social platforms, or set boundaries with unhelpful people.
3- Look after your physical health
Improving your physical health will naturally support your mental wellbeing. Ensure you’re drinking enough water and eating the right amount of calories your body needs. Research shows that getting 8 hours of sleep, eating nutritious meals, and moving your body for 30 minutes a day all contribute positively. To build better habits, try waking up earlier, switching to healthier food options, quitting fast food, or walking more—like parking a bit farther than usual.
4- Start saying yes to new hobbies
Investing in a new hobby can bring joy and personal growth. Some hobbies, such as sports, support your physical health. Others, like learning an instrument or a language, expand your skills and knowledge. This not only boosts self-esteem and fulfillment but also helps you connect with others through social hobbies that broaden your circle.
5- Let it out
Now that the stigma around mental health is slowly fading, it’s important to normalize seeking professional help. But support doesn’t always have to be formal—talking to trusted friends or family can also be healing. We are social beings created for connection. Trying to carry everything alone often leads to more harm. Reaching out for support can significantly improve your mental health.
